Simple. Safe. Bike parking.
radbox.nrw is strengthening connected mobility in North Rhine-Westphalia
Greater reach, greater connectivity, greater convenience: With the completion of the funded project and its establishment as a statewide access system for booking bicycle parking spaces in lockable facilities, radbox.nrw took a decisive step forward in 2026. The system, jointly operated by go.Rheinland and Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe (NWL), is now in use at more than 220 locations. In over 100 municipalities, it promotes the integration of bicycles and public transit, making sustainable mobility a practical part of daily life for an ever-growing number of people.
With the launch of radbox.nrw in 2022, go.Rheinland and NWL laid the foundation for a unified digital booking and access system for secure bicycle parking facilities. Two years later, the radbox.nrw app for Android and iOS was released. Since then, it has enabled users to conveniently book, manage, and unlock bike lockers, group garages, and bike parking facilities via smartphone. With the technical integration of “DeinRadschloss,” the system operated by the Rhine-Ruhr Transport Association (VRR), another step toward a statewide offering was taken in 2026. This gives users access to a significantly expanded network of secure bicycle parking facilities in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The benefits at a glance:
- Wide availability of digital bike parking options
- Integration of bicycles and public transit (Bike and Ride)
- Simple digital booking and access solution
Funded Project Successfully Completed
With the completion of the development phase funded by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, radbox.nrw reached an important milestone in its development. Within just a few years, the project succeeded in establishing a cross-agency booking and access system that is now used by municipalities, infrastructure operators, and public transit companies.
This successful implementation highlights the contribution that digital solutions can make to integrating bicycling with public transit. Secure and user-friendly bicycle parking facilities make it easier to switch to buses and trains and strengthen sustainable mobility chains for the first and last mile.

“Over the past few years, radbox.nrw has evolved into a unified system that provides riders with secure bicycle parking throughout North Rhine-Westphalia, even across municipal boundaries. The high level of acceptance and the steadily increasing number of users and locations show that secure bicycle parking facilities are an important component of connected mobility.”
The network continues to grow
In parallel with technical advancements, the network of secure bicycle parking facilities continued to expand steadily in 2026 with new locations stretching from Aachen through Cologne to Bielefeld. New bike lockers, collective garages, and bike parking facilities are creating additional capacity at train stations, stops, and mobility hubs, making it easier for commuters to combine biking with public transit.
Examples of this can be found throughout the region: new bike lockers at the Industriepark Meckenheim train station, the bike collection garage at the Stolberg Central Station mobility hub, and the mobility hub at the Imgenbroich bus terminal in Monschau expand the range of secure, digitally bookable parking spaces in the immediate vicinity of public transit.
A notable example of the ongoing development of high-quality Bike+Ride services is the bicycle parking garage at the Bedburg train station. Since 2026, a total of 148 parking spaces—including spaces for cargo bikes—have been available there. The facility is complemented by charging stations for e-bike batteries, a bicycle service station, and video surveillance. The well-lit facility, with its sophisticated architectural design, has also been recognized by the North Rhine-Westphalia Chamber of Architects. It exemplifies the importance that modern bicycle infrastructure now holds in urban and mobility planning.
Networking Creates Added Value
The collaboration between the participating authorities and transit agencies illustrates how greater coordination can lead to user-friendly and sustainable solutions for secure bicycle parking. Passengers benefit from a wider range of parking spaces and the seamless integration of bicycles into their travel plans.

“With radbox.nrw, a comprehensive sustainable mobility service is taking shape across North Rhine-Westphalia, further strengthening the role of bicycles as part of modern mobility chains alongside public transportation.”
Next Step: Deep Integration into Mobility Platforms
This successful integration also lays the foundation for the next stage of development for radbox.nrw. In the future, the use of bicycle parking facilities will be integrated even more closely into existing mobility platforms. The goal is to enable booking, management, and access directly through regional mobility apps. Initial steps toward this are already planned with apps such as naveo and movA.
This will make secure bicycle parking a natural part of digital travel chains. In the future, passengers will be able to switch even more easily between bicycles, buses, and trains and organize their entire mobility through central apps.
The steadily rising number of facilities and registrations already demonstrates that secure bicycle parking facilities are making an important contribution to the mobility transition. With every new location and every additional integration, the importance of radbox.nrw as a central platform for connected mobility in North Rhine-Westphalia continues to grow.
