MDD - a strong database for NRW
The NRW multimodal data hub continues to turn

The Multimodal Data Hub (MDD) NRW forms the background system for cross-modal mobility data in North Rhine-Westphalia. After being set up at Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS) as part of a grant until the end of 2024, the project is now being continued under the leadership of go.Rheinland. All previous mobility service providers remain on board as data suppliers: a strong signal of trust in the platform and the relevance of the joint work for sustainable and digital mobility development in NRW.
ÖV-Datenverbund NRW supports continued operation after funding ends
The Public Transport Data Network NRW - a voluntary association of transport associations and public transport authorities in NRW (Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr, VRR, Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe, NWL, Aachener Verkehrsverbund, AVV and VRS) - organizes the state-wide provision of public transport data via the Central Coordination Office (ZKS). This data flows into the DELFI state server and is also available to open platforms.
On behalf of all network partners, the VRS implemented the MDD NRW and was closely involved in the initiation, implementation and joint consolidation of the NRW public transport data network. The partners of the public transport data network link the MDD NRW with the DELFI state tesserver and their information systems, thus enabling consistent state-wide intermodal and multimodal information. One example of this is the revised VRS app, which now also integrates offers for the first and last mile.
Thanks to the successful cross-network cooperation, the ÖV-Datenverbund NRW has been jointly financing the MDD NRW since January 2025.

A strong foundation for digital sustainable mobility
The MDD NRW has been in operation since October 2024. It bundles extensive mobility data from the areas of regional and local public transport and sharing mobility as well as infrastructure data (1) across NRW. go.Rheinland as the operator checks and validates the data (2), which is then made available to users (3) centrally via standardized interfaces. The background system is aimed at transport associations, transport companies, local authorities and state companies such as NRW.Mobidrom - for passenger information systems, planning purposes or to meet statutory data provision obligations, for example.
Further development: a background system for smart P&R facilities
The data offered by MDD NRW will continue to grow in the future. One focus is on the integration of municipal P&R facilities with precise parking space allocation and real-time occupancy data.

"We see it as our central task to support passenger information and mobility planning with a growing range of data. In particular, the designation of P&R facilities with specific parking spaces for the first time in Germany represents an important step towards the digitalization of mobility in the Rhineland and throughout NRW."
These extensions make it possible to integrate P&R facilities directly into passenger information systems for specific parking spaces and to use them for planning purposes. go.Rheinland supports local authorities with funding programs (see Smart commuter parking spaces) and a framework agreement for digital infrastructure measures such as parking space detection and digital displays.
